Robert Moverley - Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in shoulder and elbow surgery

Rob relocated to Poole in 2020 with his young family, to take up his role as Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at University Hospitals Dorset with a specialist interest in shoulder and elbow surgery.

Rob had first hand experience of the benefit of orthopaedic care after sustaining a severe knee ligament injury playing rugby in 2002. So impressed by the impact on patient’s quality of life that an orthopaedic surgeon can have, Rob obtained a place in Birmingham Medical School with the singular goal of becoming a world-class orthopaedic surgeon.

Graduating in 2008 Rob completed junior doctor roles in some of London’s most prestigious hospitals and undertook a six-year higher surgical training program, learning from some of the most respected surgeons in the country.

Following this Rob completed a yearlong fellowship at Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospital focusing on arthroscopic shoulder surgery, shoulder replacement and shoulder and elbow trauma. Rob completed his training with a 6-month post in a highly specialised elbow practice gaining experience in cutting edge techniques in the treatment of elbow trauma, instability and arthritis.

Rob gained fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2017 and remains an active member of the British Orthopaedic Association and the British Elbow and Shoulder Society. Both during his training and since becoming a consultant Rob has been active in clinical research and academia. He has published international papers and attends scientific meetings all around the world.

Passionate about sport Rob remains a keen footballer and cyclist as well as enjoying skiing, golf, running and learning to kite surf. Having sustained many serious sports injuries he has a passion for returning patients to their maximum level of physical function possible. Rob combines his passion for orthopaedic and sports as the attending trauma surgeon for the Abu-Dhabi Formula 1 Grand Prix.

Rob’s special interests include upper limb trauma, complex sports shoulder and elbow surgery. He has an interest in developing novel techniques of arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery, including management of bone loss in shoulder instability and cutting edge strategies for irreparable rotator cuff tears. Rob has an in depth experience of shoulder replacement in all age groups. He uses the latest 3-D CT planning technology and the best performing implants to maximize a patient’s function and quality of life.

Rob’s mission is to provide his patients with cutting edge, evidence-based treatments in a friendly and accessible manner. Both his patients and peers have frequently praised Rob for his clarity of communication and the high level of service delivered by his team.

Rob is excited to bring world-class shoulder and elbow surgery to the friendly and active population of East Dorset.
